Breath Of The Wild Epona How To Find And Register The Horse

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Epona remains one of the most iconic companions Link can acquire during his journey across Hyrule. Unlike standard wild horses roaming the fields, this legendary steed features maxed-out stats and a gentle temperament right from the start. Securing Epona requires a specific approach, as she cannot be found wandering in the open world naturally.
How to Summon Epona in Hyrule
To bring Epona into your game, you must use a compatible amiibo figure, such as the Super Smash Bros. Link or Twilight Princess Link amiibo. First, make sure you have enabled amiibo functionality within the main game settings menu. Once activated, switch to the amiibo Rune on your Sheikah Slate and scan the figure over your controller's NFC reader.
It is crucial to scan the amiibo in an open field near an accessible path or stable. Avoid scanning the figure in restricted regions like the Gerudo Desert or on steep mountain peaks where horses cannot travel. If scanned under the right conditions, Epona will immediately spawn directly in front of Link.
Mounting and Taming the Legendary Steed
When Epona appears, approaching her is much easier than dealing with wild steeds. Because she arrives with a maximum bond level, Link can mount her right away without needing to soothe or tame her. This allows players to ride at full speed immediately after summoning.
Even though she comes fully bonded, you must take care not to leave her unattended before registering. If you fast-travel away or accidentally lose track of her before visiting a stable, she may vanish. Re-summoning her later can require multiple scanning attempts due to reduced drop rates after the first spawn.
Registering Epona at a Local Stable
To ensure Epona stays with you permanently, ride her directly to the nearest stable master. Speak to the attendant while remaining mounted or standing right next to her to initiate registration. The stable master will charge a standard fee of 20 Rupees to register the steed.
Upon registering, the stable master will recognize Epona as a legendary horse and will refuse to let you change her name. She will also automatically be equipped with her unique Epona gear, which features exclusive Triforce designs. Once registered, you can board or summon her from any stable across Hyrule whenever you need.
Important Rules and Features to Remember
Epona comes equipped with four stars in strength, speed, and stamina, making her one of the most balanced horses in the game. Unlike other custom horses, her mane cannot be styled, nor can her saddle and bridle be customized at stables. This preserves her classic historical appearance from previous franchise entries.
If Epona ever meets a tragic fate during battle, she can be revived by visiting the Horse God Malanya. However, this revival only works if she was properly registered at a stable prior to her death. Taking the time to register her immediately ensures you never permanently lose this legendary companion.
